HealthSmart Non-Contact Instant Read Infrared Forehead Thermometer
Lightweight, this infrared thermometer with a plastic housing is angled so it is comfortable to hold. Press the large (scan) button to turn the device on and the ambient temperature is automatically displayed. Operation is straightforward – press and hold the scan button while aiming the sensor located at the top edge of the device up to two inches away from the forehead for a few seconds until the beeping stops.After using the thermometer multiple times on two adults (neither had a fever) and comparing the result with an oral thermometer the forehead reading varied from a few tenths up to seven tenths of a degree lower. This is a relatively small difference, and given small things like whether the forehead is completely clean, free of oil and/or lotions the result may be affected.Using the Object function my results were consistent and accurate. This function allows the temperature of food, a baby bottle, etc. to be measured. Object mode is reached from the ambient temperature/standby status by pressing the two buttons on the front panel at the same time until the word Food is displayed.Again to obtain a reading, hold the thermometer up to two inches away from the item being measured and press the large button and the temperature of the food will be displayed. I used a digital food thermometer that has provided accurate results in the past along with this infrared model on hot coffee and the results were within one-tenth of a degree. Repeated attempts obtained the same result.So, although there was a small discrepancy between the oral and this forehead thermometer I do see the utility of incorporating the device as a preliminary step if a fever is suspected to do a quick scan and if within one degree of being elevated, follow up with another method.Basic features include a backlit LCD display that is large, clear and the numeric result is easy to read. Additionally, a lighted ring around the button glows green if there is no temperature and red if one is indicated. The smaller button on the front of the device activate the memory function – up to 9 readings can be stored. The included booklet is printed with a tiny font but is written clearly and is easy to understand.Less important but still a positive attribute is an easy-open clamshell pack. A small half-moon cut-out on the back of the package permits the perforated back panel to be pulled off avoiding any finger cuts. To start the unit, slide open the battery compartment door and remove the clear tab blocking the battery from connecting to the sensor. Two AAA batteries are included.There is so much to like with this forehead method of checking for fevers – it is both convenient and hygienic. The ambient readings matched my thermostat, and the object readings matched my digital thermometer but the forehead readings had small variances from an oral thermometer.

I’m really sick with an infection right now and have been running high temps of 102-103 for four days as verified by a home health nurse & my own thermometer.Because my son also just tested positive for COVID, I decided to get an additional thermometer so we wouldn’t have to share & risk him infecting me, so I chose this one, which arrived today.When I scanned it in my ear, it showed the same temp,102F that the nurse just got with his thermometer. However, when I scanned my forehead, like this thermometer claims to be able to do, it gave me 96F. Obviously inaccurate. We tried several times & it was never even close.Then we scanned a drink that we checked the temp of with a food thermometer. All we got was “Lo” and “Err”, it never registered the temp.If you’re buying this for a regular in-ear thermometer, it’s fine. But if like me, you wanted the other features that were promised, find something else. This one doesn’t work.All of my reviews are true and accurate based on my own experience.
